The prescription birth control medication Yaz has been at the center of a growing number of lawsuits, as more than 4,000 individual and class action lawsuits have been filed against Yaz’s manufacturer, Bayer Pharmaceuticals, over alleged side effects suffered by women ages 14 and older who had been prescribed the contraceptive. The once immensely popular drug had also been previously prescribed as an acne treatment for some women.
Yaz was, like all prescription medications, subject to the same clinical trials and FDA approval, but it is difficult to determine side effects in contraceptive drugs with the inability to use placebos in testing. For several years, women have reported serious side effects as a result of using Yaz, including strokes, pulmonary embolisms, deep vein thrombosis, gallbladder disease, heart attacks, and sudden death.
